Mom holds up a piece of romaine lettuce, and Cedric immediately starts wriggling in his dad’s arms to get to it. The orange cat reaches out with his paws, swats at the leaf, and keeps stretching until he finally manages to grab it. In a video shared by @milnemenagerie, Cedric hangs on while his mom holds the other end, crunching through the lettuce with such enthusiasm that even the sound of him eating is entertaining. His mom’s caption reads, “On today’s episode of what will Cedric eat… Romaine lettuce” It seems this leafy vegetable has made the cut.

Orange cat’s focused nibbling makes an ordinary romaine lettuce look like a prized treat

The second Cedric sees the lettuce leaf, he starts stretching toward it from his dad’s arms. He bats at it, reaches again, and keeps trying until he manages to grab hold with both paws. Then the crunching begins and the microphone picks up every bite. Cedric happily chews away, while his mom still has hold of the other end.

He doesn’t seem interested in sharing, either. Cedric tightens his grip and keeps biting until his mom eventually lets go. Even then, he is determined to finish what he started, working on the remaining piece with the same enthusiasm. A little lettuce falls to the floor near the end, and Cedric looks ready to go after it before the video cuts off.

The clip has become a huge hit, with more than 23 million views and 2.5 million likes. Plenty of viewers are amused by the unusual snack choice. “And I thought the labradors loved food,” one person joked. Another commented, “Biblical greed for no nutrients,” while someone else compared the enthusiastic eater to “a small zebra.”

Cats are obligate carnivores, so lettuce isn’t a substitute for the animal-based nutrients they need. A little plain lettuce may be safe for many cats in small amounts, but it shouldn’t become a major part of their diet. For Cedric, though, Romaine lettuce has clearly made quite an impression. His family’s next episode of “what will Cedric eat” could be an interesting one.
