‘Michael’: Golden Globes Reject Submission to Compete in Comedy/Musical Categories

The music of “ Michael ” is bringing some drama.

Variety has confirmed that Lionsgate’s bid to have its Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” compete as a comedy or musical at the Golden Globes has been denied.

The Golden Globes’ decision means the film, starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, is currently slated for the drama categories where it would compete against for one of the six available slots against Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” Los Javis’ “La Bola Negra” and more. The supporting actor and supporting actress categories do not separate by genre, so this has no effect on his co-stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long. Lionsgate can appeal the ruling ahead of the Oct. 31 submission deadline. If the studio moves forward, the organization’s awards committee would evaluate the appeal. Popular on Variety

According to the Golden Globes rules, it states: “A musical can be a comedy or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot.”

Under Globes procedure, when a film submits in a category that goes against the grain, or one in which it would not typically be accepted, a letter from the director is required to proceed. That letter, from director “Michael” Antoine Fuqua, was included with the studio’s submission. The organization reviewed the request and denied it anyway.

An appeal may still be possible before the Oct. 31 submission deadline, but sources have shared an appeal will likely not be pursued.

Musical biopics have long been tricky to classify at the Globes. “Ray” and “Walk the Line” both competed in, and won, the comedy or musical categories in the mid-2000s. Those victories prompted a rule change requiring that songs propel the narrative rather than appear as standalone performances. In other words, music alone is no longer enough to qualify a film as a musical. By that standard, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Elvis,” and “A Complete Unknown” were all submitted as dramas in the years since.

One notable exception: “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the Coen brothers’ story of a folk singer struggling for success in 1961, was permitted to compete as a comedy during its respective year.

That same distinction appears to have decided the fate of “Michael.” Jackson performs many of his uncle’s biggest hits in the film. Still, the organization evidently viewed those sequences as re-creations of Michael Jackson’s performances rather than as integral storytelling devices.

Antoine Fuqua’s film, which opened April 24, became the first biopic in history to surpass $1 billion worldwide and Lionsgate’s biggest release ever. It also made a star of Jaafar Jackson , who had never acted professionally before.

The ruling does not affect the Globes’ broader slate of classification decisions. The Globes have accepted both “Obsession” and “Tender Loving Care” as comedies for consideration.

The 84th Golden Globe nominations will be announced Monday, Dec. 7, and the ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser, is set for Sunday, Jan. 10.

Christina Applegate Breaks Down in Tears Revealing She Was Misdiagnosed with MS: ‘I’m Back at Square One’Vanessa Etienne, Rachel McRadyTue, October 20, 2026 at 11:24 AM UTC

Christina Applegate learned from her doctor that she does not have multiple sclerosis despite experiencing debilitating symptoms since 2021

The actress said if anything her condition has gotten worse and doctors will investigate what has caused her health issues

Applegate returned to MeSsy podcast after taking time away to process the diagnosis change and other health concerns

Christina Applegate returned to hosting her MeSsy podcast with shocking news.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Applegate and co-host Jamie Lynn Sigler released back-to-back episodes of their podcast, where the actresses have raw discussions about their respective journeys with multiple sclerosis.

However, during her return episode Applegate, 54, emotionally shared that she’s taken time away from the podcast to process a new revelation from her doctor — she does not, in fact, have MS.

“She came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS,’ ” Applegate recalled through tears. “I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”

Dr. Marwa Kaisey, associate professor with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center department of neurology, who joined Applegate and Sigler for the second episode of the podcast, says MS misdiagnoses are “fairly common” due to the fact that “we don’t have one single test for MS. It’s not like we have something like a pregnancy test that says, ‘Yes. You have it.’ ‘No. You don’t.’ It’s a list of criteria.”Kaisey says nearly 20 percent of those diagnosed with MS turn out not to have the disease. “Almost one in five of these people who’d been told they had MS, some for decades, didn’t actually have it. And a majority of them were on medication to treat their MS.”

Applegate noted that despite learning that she’d been misdiagnosed, it didn’t impact any of her debilitating symptoms.

“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of the sudden I’m better,” Applegate continued. “I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse. So I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me. And that’s going to be an online investigation that my doctors are going to be getting into just to find out what has been going on since 2021, why did this happen?”

In the Part II of the podcast, Applegate once again got emotional, saying, “I’ve gone through a great depression because of it. But I lost everything. I lost my job. I lost — I’m sorry. What do you say to someone who’s been living with this for six years — God, I’m so sorry — because it stopped my life. I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”

The Dead to Me actress admitted to struggling with her place in the MS community, especially after building a community of others who were diagnosed with MS.

“It’s weird because I feel like I let everybody down,” Applegate shared. “It’s this weird feeling because I became this — you and I, the poster children for MS. And everything I was doing. I had a reason. I had a f---ing reason as to why my day sucked every day. And now I don’t have a reason and it’s very unnerving and it’s very confusing for me.”

Applegate said she’s still in a “state of shock” over the misdiagnosis, calling it a “mindf---.”

The Emmy winner added that she took time off from the podcast to “process” the news while also experiencing “some health stuff.”

Ultimately, Applegate shared that she views her health journey as, “the same game with a different name.”

On March 31, Sigler announced that the pair were taking a short hiatus from MeSsy. Shortly after, it was reported that Applegate had been hospitalized due to complications of her multiple sclerosis. The podcast resumed on April 21 and Sigler spent the following months recording episodes solo while featuring special guests.

Applegate was originally diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021. The progressive disease damages the protective cover around nerves, called myelin, in the central nervous system, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It can cause muscle weakness, vision changes, numbness, memory loss and gastrointestinal issues.

The actress first addressed reports of her hospitalization via Instagram in April, shortly following the release of her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes. She thanked fans for their support and added, “Health issues are a constant for me, but I’m a strong chick and I’m getting stronger and better every day.”

“I’m taking a moment to focus on my health, but I’ll be back with more to say soon enough,” she said at the time.

In August, a source told PEOPLE that she was home from the hospital and “doing very well.”

Here’s How Val Chmerkovskiy Reacted to Alan Bersten Replacing Him on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Leon Bennett // Getty Images Alan Bersten is stepping in for Val Chmerkovskiy this week on Dancing With the Stars and will be performing a Viennese waltz with Jenna Dewan for the show’s “Dedication Night.” Alan was eliminated from DWTS earlier this season, and his return to the ballroom comes amid Val being suspended for the “Oscar Slap” comment he made toward Carrie Ann Inaba.

There’s been a lot of chatter about Alan being chosen to replace Val ( Gleb Savchenko has plenty of feelings ), but apparently Val is here for it. A production source tells E! News that he “fully trusts Alan to manage this week and is grateful that he’s stepped in,” confirming that “as per Val’s conversations with the network, he fully plans to return to the show next week with his wonderful dance partner Jenna Dewan.”

Meanwhile, a source previously told Variety that Jenna “has continued to be a true professional and respectful of the process. Jenna is a beloved part of the Dancing with the Stars family, and we are grateful for the joy and positivity she brings to the show.”

There’s been some speculation about how Val’s suspension went down behind the scenes (with some sources saying Carrie Ann Inaba went to HR, and others saying the studio made the first moves to suspend Val), but either way, this is a first for DWTS !

Disney Names Carol Choi Asia Pacific President as Luke Kang Retires

Carol Choi will become president of The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific on Dec. 1, replacing Luke Kang , who is stepping down after 16 years at the Mouse House.

Choi is currently executive VP of The Walt Disney Company APAC. In the top job, she will run Disney Entertainment’s operations in the region, from studios and Disney+ to locally produced originals, content sales, media networks and consumer products. Her territory will stretch from Greater China, Japan and South Korea through Southeast Asia to Australia and New Zealand. “Luke Kang has been an exceptional leader and a driving force behind Disney’s growth and transformation across Asia Pacific,” said Alan Bergman, chair of Disney Entertainment, Studios, and Jimmy Pitaro, chair of ESPN. “Carol Choi is a proven Disney leader with broad operating experience, strong creative instincts, and a deep understanding of the region, and she is the perfect person to lead the organization into its next chapter.” Popular on Variety

Choi has spent 20 years with the company. In her current post, she has overseen the region’s studio operations, original content strategy and integrated marketing. Earlier, she ran Disney’s Japan and Korea businesses as managing director and held senior posts in Greater China. Along the way, she played a part in bringing Disney+ to the region and growing the service, expanded the studio business and forged lasting partnerships with leading creators and talent across Asia Pacific.

Kang came to Disney in 2011 to head its Korea operation as managing director, later taking charge of the company’s operations in Greater China and North Asia. There, he grew Disney’s business through localization, digital initiatives and closer ties with consumers. As APAC president, he oversaw growth across the region’s markets and brands, steered the rollout of Disney+ and other new ventures, and invested in creative projects, including original content.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to lead Disney in Asia Pacific through a period of significant growth and transformation,” said Kang. “Carol is an exceptional leader whose deep knowledge of our businesses, creative ambition, and instinct for consumers make her uniquely positioned to build on this momentum and lead APAC into its next phase of growth.”

Anurag Kashyap and Vasan Bala Present Mumbai Cab Thriller ‘Aakhri Ride’ for Halloween Release (EXCLUSIVE)

Indian filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vasan Bala have come on board to present “ Aakhri Ride ,” a short thriller set over a single Halloween night in Mumbai, which will release worldwide on Oct. 31.

The film will go out on Oh Short Flips, a YouTube channel curated by Kashyap.

Vijesh Rajan and Yashoda Parthasarthy wrote and directed the short, their first film. It follows a Mumbai ride-share driver who is driven to breaking point during one frightening night. Related Stories Ava DuVernay on Her Latest Doc '14th': 'We're in the Midst of Something Very Sinister, Something Very Dangerous' Wim Wenders Boards Peter Lindbergh Documentary ‘Truth:Beauty’

Kashyap said he had worked with the pair since the “Gangs of Wasseypur” days and “always believed they are excellent storytellers with a unique visual language. So when they finally decided to turn writer-directors, it was an easy decision to back them. And now, I am quite excited to see the audience’s response to their first film – ‘Aakhri Ride,’ when it releases on Halloween Day.” Popular on Variety

Chandan Roy (“Panchayat”) and Aamir Dalvi (“Kennedy”) head the cast, and Faisal Malik (“Panchayat”) also appears. Ranjan Singh, Vishesh Agrawal, Rajan EPK and Kashyap produced, with Navaras Pictures backing the project in association with Plexus Motion Pictures and Flip Films.

Bala described Rajan as the “Wiz Kid” that filmmaker Srinivas had introduced him and his colleagues to. “We were always in awe of what he could do with his VFX skills but there was always a sensitive and fun storyteller in him. When he and Yashoda went to make the film, we all rooted for them. I was beyond excited to watch their short film. It’s sharp, fun, quirky and with a beating heart. So coming on board was a nano second decision, a no brainer,” Bala said.

The directors traced the idea back to long taxi rides home after meetings around the city. “We’d be sitting in the back seat, talking about work or sitting in silence, while the driver was often carrying a completely different world on his phone: family back home, money worries, things we may never fully know. We began to notice an invisible social divide: we were enjoying the comfort of being driven home, while he was trying to make ends meet. We shared a small space, but knew so little about each other’s lives,” they said.

The pair set out to examine that gap through a mix of horror and comedy, built around a man so weighed down by daily problems that he fails to see what he has picked up. “We hope viewers laugh, get spooked, and maybe think a little about the person driving them home,” they said.

The film began its festival run in the Short Film Market Picks at Clermont-Ferrand , then landed selections at three genre events: BIFAN in Bucheon, Fantasia International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. Its circuit, which includes Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying festivals, also took in Florida Film Festival, Austin After Dark, Wench, Fantaspoa, events in Rhode Island and San Jose, Italy’s Absurd Film Festival, France’s Red Movie Awards, Cannes Indie Shorts and New York Indie Shorts Awards.

At Fantasia, the short won the Silver Audience Award for best Asian short. It also picked up best film at the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival and best Indian short at the Indo Dubai International Film Festival, and finished as second runner-up at BISFF.

Human-AI Indian Music Label Raagverse Launches With ‘Janaa Hai Toh Jao’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Raagverse , a new Indian music label that pairs human songwriting with AI production tools, will release its first album, “Janaa Hai Toh Jao,” on Oct. 20.

The label is the latest venture from Amita Madhvani, CEO of Equinox Virtual, which she co-founded with Ram Madhvani. Equinox Virtual is the arm of Equinox Films and Ram Madhvani Films that develops projects using artificial intelligence and immersive technology. Related Stories Julianne Moore to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award From 'The Debut' Director Jesse Eisenberg at Rome Film Festival

The debut album has three songs: the title track, “Koi Keh De Usse” and “Tere Liye.” Mamta Javkar wrote the lyrics for all of them. “Janaa Hai Toh Jao” leads the release, which will be available on YouTube Music, Apple Music, Spotify and other major streaming services. Popular on Variety

Raagverse is built on a creative process that keeps people in charge by design. Each song starts with Javkar’s words and the feeling or idea behind them. AI then comes in as one of several tools used to shape that material into a finished recording. People make the calls on lyrics, creative direction and the mood each track should carry.

Madhvani said her first experiments with AI as part of a wider creative process came on “Mohini – Khud Se Pyaar,” a musical microdrama Equinox Virtual made with the technology. “What stayed with me from that experience was that technology could give us new ways to execute an idea, but the idea itself still needed to come from somewhere deeply human. With Raagverse, I wanted to take that thought into music,” she said. “For me, that is where this gets exciting. It is not human creativity versus AI. It is about seeing what becomes possible when human imagination leads and technology helps us take it somewhere new.”

Raagverse is registered as an intellectual property. Equinox Virtual plans to keep using it as a home for original music made the same way, with software expanding what the team can do while the songwriting stays in human hands.

The label joins a slate at Equinox Virtual that also includes a virtual reality experience built with AI and drawing on Indian text “Bhagavad Gita.” The company’s aim is to use new technology to create fresh story formats and original Indian content for a global audience.

Lisa Rinna and her daughter Delilah Belle Hamlin, 28, wore daring looks at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on October 18.

Rinna wowed in a sultry, plunging ballerina dress, while her mini-me stunned in a naked LBD.

They supported the reality star’s other daughter, Amelia Gray, 25, as she walked the runway.

Lisa Rinna has been booked and busy. On the heels of debuting her shortest bob ever at the third annual InStyle Imagemaker Awards on October 16, the reality star capped off her glamorous weekend with an appearance at the 2026 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on October 18. Not only did Rinna serve another major look, but she brought her stunning mini-me daughter, Delilah Belle Hamlin, 28.

The mother-daughter duo walked the pink carpet in daring ensembles. Starting with the You Better Believe I’m Gonna Talk About It author, she put a sultry spin (or pirouette, rather) on ballerina dressing. Rinna wowed in a dress that featured a plunging brown bodice that resembled a mob wife-coded coat, a super cinched pale pink corset with a drop waist, and a voluminous tutu. She added a brown fascinator with a huge feather sticking out, red sling-back heels with an exaggerated pointed toe, and gold earrings.

The 63-year-old actress styled her brunette pixie with her signature spiky, flipped ends. As for glam, Rinna went total bombshell with glittery eyeshadow, smoky eyeliner, rosy cheeks, sun-glazed skin, and glossy nude lips.

Hamlin, meanwhile, breathed new life into the naked dress in a black lace midi dress that was completely sheer in the front through the hips, baring her matching black underwear beneath. The centerpiece featured a plunging V-neckline, thick straps, a wispy skirt, and a bow accent in the back. She added a luxe blue feather boa, black pointed-toe pumps with a floral design, and diamond drop earrings.

The model and actress styled her golden blonde hair in a sophisticated updo with her bangs hanging out. She wore glowy makeup, complete with luminous skin, peachy pink cheeks, a smoky eye, and glossy lips.

The pair were in attendance to support Rinna’s other daughter, Amelia Gray, 25, as she walked the runway. Gray came down the catwalk in a neon green push-up bra, matching high-cut underwear, and a glittery teal-colored cover-up set, composed of a cropped long-sleeve and tiny miniskirt. She added bright yellow hoop earrings and gold open-toe heels. A voluminous blowout and bronzy makeup finished off her first look.

Later in the evening, she got her wings: a wispy, cloud-like pair with feathers jutting out in all directions. Her new accessory was accompanied by a pale blue push-up bra and tiny matching lace thong, both of which featured floss-thin straps crisscrossing over her body. Chunky clear bangles, PVC heels, and spherical drop earrings served as the final touches.

Actor Matthew McConaughey released an impassioned six-minute video on social media on Sunday, October 18, urging Americans to reject the traditional two-party system and support Independent candidates in the impending midterm elections.

McConaughey has repeatedly considered running for governor of Texas or another public office but has yet to do so.

Declaring that the current political system has "never been more lopsided," McConaughey argued that Independents represent most Americans' true feelings and are essential to breaking the Democratic and Republican parties' stranglehold.

The Dallas Buyer’s Club star talked about a “Toll Booth" for partisanship, saying that if voters elected just three to five "true independents" to the U.S. Senate, they could act as a centrist legislative gatekeeper.

“The extreme stuff can’t pay the toll,” he said.

Because neither major party could easily pass legislation without them, they would block extreme policies on both sides, forcing more moderate, compromise-driven laws.

Independents are Not 'Fence-Sitters'

The 56-year-old Oscar winner pushed back on the long-held notion that an independent vote is a "wasted vote."

Dispelling the stereotype that political independents are purely passive "fence-sitters," he stated, "Independent does not mean you're middle of the road. Independent is the original road. Before there was ever a Republican or a Democrat, there was an American.”

“Independents belong in the fight. Not as a protest, not as a spoiler, but as a real and potential winner on the ballot and considered seriously by us,” he declared. “Independent does not mean you’re middle of the road. Independent is the original road. Before there was ever a Republican or Democrat, there was an American.”

'A Fair Fight'

McConaughey blasted America's two-party political system as 'lopsided.'MEGA

Citing Gallup polling data from 2025 showing that roughly 45 percent of Americans identify as politically independent, he stressed that they are the top political group nationwide but have been repeatedly forced into a false binary choice.

While he nodded to former Sen. Joe Manchin's Independent Leadership Council, he explicitly said he wasn't using the video to endorse any particular candidate.

“The system has never been more lopsided,” he said. “I am not here today to endorse a candidate or party. I am here endorsing two things: fairness and reality. See, I believe in a fair fight, and a fair fight is not just two fighters throwing the same punches at each other for 50 years. A fair fight is when the fighters who oughta be represented in the fight are actually in the fight!”

Fans Were Divided

The Oscar-winner's video sparked backlash.MEGA

The actor’s video wasn’t one of his best-reviewed, as many critical commenters argued that the current political climate carries stakes that are "too high" to risk splitting votes.

These users expressed anxiety that backing third-party or independent candidates in consequential midterm races could accidentally act as a spoiler and hand victories to opposing major-party candidates.

However, some fans praised the actor for leveraging his platform to challenge political partisanship, thanking him for offering a viable alternative to political polarization and expressing their own exhaustion with the two-party status quo.
