The Golden State Valkyries are one win away from winning their first ever WNBA championship. In Game 6, they will battle the Atlanta Dream once again, as Angel Reese and her team try to keep their own title hopes alive. It is set to be a battle for the ages.
Except, this battle is taking place right around the time a lot of people on the West Coast are sitting down to have their breakfast. Hard as it may be to believe, the tip-off in Atlanta is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET, which would be 9:30 a.m. for hometown Valkyries fans. A lot of people think this isn't quite right.
For the WNBA, these arena issues have been a constant undercurrent during their flagship series of the year. While they managed to figure it out in Games 3 and 4, it seems that their compromise for Game 6 is far from a popular one among those watching.
Bill Simmons has already called it out as a poor management decision. And former NFL player Emmanuel Acho has weighed in with an even stronger take.
"We're moving a FINALS game with one of the sport's biggest stars to mid day and MID WEEK!? This is high-key disrespectful to the sport and its athletes. High school 7 on 7 leagues get more primetime tv placement," Acho wrote in a post on X.
It is hard to disagree with him. Angel Reese playing the first Finals elimination game of her career is must-see TV. The Valkyries potentially winning it all is must-see TV too. Having this game at such an odd time of the day is a choice which could prove to be quite costly for the WNBA.
