What do you call a Lada on top of a hill? A miracle, the joke goes.

Although, as I found driving around the former Soviet Union where the car was born in 1973, a hill comes in handy when your engine fails.

Half a century after the Russian-made cars were first introduced to the UK, in May 1974, the cars are seeing a resurgence in popularity, and soaring price tags to go with it.

An entire community of superfans has formed around Ladas. Dedicated Facebook groups have tens of thousands of members between them.

Many look to Ed Hughes, 53, as something of an expert, and he firmly disagrees with their reputation for breakdowns.

Ed, who lives in Devon, owns a collection of 20 classic cars from the former Eastern Bloc, seven of which are Ladas.

Among them is a Lada Oka, a small city car his friend drove back from Moscow over three days in 2016.

He told Metro.co.uk: 'Most are a bit down at heel when you get them, so I put in time to bring them up to standard and they generally stay that way.'

The Lada arrives in Britain

Ed Hughes has never owned a modern car (Picture: Ed Hughes)

Ladas, produced by the Russian state-owned AvtoVAZ company, first came into his life as a child in the 1970s, not long after the first models had rolled off the ships at Hull.

The economy was turning, heavy industries were dying, and people were in need of 'cheap, dependable transport'.

Quickly they became a common sight up North, in 'crapped out industrial towns when people were inevitably made redundant', Ed said.

He told Metro.co.uk: 'Cars used to go wrong with terrifying regularity and people were terrified of huge bills because the gearbox had blown up or something.

'So a lot of people would buy a Lada because it wasn't a fashionable car or anything, but it was a basic, reasonably sized car with a warranty.'

Ladas 1985 Lada 1200 estate certainly aren't flashy cars, but they are charming (Picture: Ed Hughes)

This caught the eye of Ed's dad – recently laid off from the textile industry – when he saw a neighbour driving one around Bolton.

He too joined the growing craze with a brand new model.

So when it came to buying his first car in 1991, Ed looked to the Lada.

He bought a second hand Lada Riva with 20,000 miles. At £1,400, it was the cheapest car available.

'I'm rather eccentrically still driving it', he said. And it drives 'beautifully'.

Ed added: 'It continues to run like a sewing machine. The gearbox is lovely and crisp.

'The engine is nice and quiet and smooth. There are never any problems with it.'

That's true even of the times he's driven 250 miles in a Lada 1200 from 1979 without a hitch.

A new era of popularity

Ladas are still a budget car of convenience in former Soviet states – from Ukraine to Uzbekistan.

You can buy a second hand, first generation Lada with a sticky door and tyres that need replacing for less than £100.

But they've virtually vanished from the streets in Britain.

Their popularity is climbing though.

As Ed puts it, there are three types of people who buy a Lada – those like him who've always driven them, those who fancy a classic car in middle age, and young people looking for a vintage aesthetic.

Mike Tanas takes his daughter for drives in the Surrey Hills in a blue 1973 Lada 2101 as a weekend escape from London (Picture: Mike Tanas)

Something 'struck' Mike Tanas when he turned 30 in 2019. He wanted a classic car.

The 34-year-old told Metro.co.uk: 'I was looking around at all the typical stuff – Ford Escorts, Volkswagen Golf, Fiat.

'And then I thought, why not a Lada? I've got a lot of pictures of them from my childhood.'

Born to a Russian mother and a Moldovan father, Mike was well acquainted with Ladas.

Mike said: 'It's not something I've just plucked from the sky and thought, 'You know what, I fancy one of those'. I do have a connection with the car. I have fond memories.'

(Picture: Mike Tanas)

But it had been two decades since he'd last seen one when his uncle collected his family from the airport in Moldova when he was 14.

'To be honest with you', Mike said, 'I didn't think there were any around in the UK.'

He was planning to buy one in Ukraine and drive back with it until he found one for sale on eBay for £2,050.

Everything was worn from years of use – the tyres, the breaks, the steering wheel.

But it was still 'a solid car', even if the 45mph drive from Manchester to London was a bit 'sketchy'.

He said: 'I've had quite a relationship with the car, from buying it to driving it down year to having done loads of work on it, especially during lockdown period. That car has kept me busy.'

'Simple simplicity'

Isn't there something romantic about a Lada in the snow? (Picture: Ed Hughes)

Luckily for Mike he's a motorbike technician by day, so navigating the tools needed to do up the car was no bother to him, even if he'd 'never done anything with a classic car' up to then.

But you don't need a high level of skill to maintain a Lada, and that's always been core to their appeal.

Mike said: 'There's nothing tricky about it. You just need to have a common sense.'

Classic Ladas are simple cars with wind-down windows, no headrests or radio, often heavy controls and breaks you have to clamp.

Their vintage feel and quirks are charming, but they're not as eye-catching or distinct as a Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Corvette, even if their appearance on the roads do turn heads.

Except for the thrill of driving sideways thanks to rear-wheel drive, there's not much exciting about a Lada.

If anything, it's their original appeal that's endured.

It makes them stand out from a crowd of modern cars with multimedia accessories.

They're basic, reliable and easy to maintain, thanks to a factory-made instruction booklet that was still with Ed's first Lada when he bought it second hand.

Ed's first car was a 1988 Lada Riva 1300SL (Picture: Ed Hughes)

Mike said: 'It's simple simplicity. There's nothing complicated. You get in the car and there are no electronics, there are no buttons. It's just you and the car.

'There's something very pleasant about that.'

This new era of appeal has seen prices rise in the last decade, according to Ed.

He said: 'Most of the ones I bought, I paid about 100 quid for. I mean, literally, you couldn't give them away 20 years ago.'

Now a wreck of a scarce right-hand drive model would put a £1,500 dent in your pocket, but Ed 'wouldn't advise you to buy' that.

A 'decent' one might cost around £5,000.

Ed said: 'You never come across a cheap one anymore. Before you were falling over them.'

But there is some trouble in the classic Lada market.

War looms over the Lada

Ladas are one of the most common car in Ukraine, where many people in the UK bought theirs before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 (Picture: Danny Rigg)

Although Ed and his friends have driven classic cars all the way back from Moscow in the past, and Mike dreamt of doing so from Ukraine, war has put a stop to that.

Sanctions placed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine halted production of newer Lada models.

Renault, the French car company, sold its stake in the company back to the Russian state.

Commercial imports from Russia have ceased.

One UK importer, Mark Key, wrote on his website before Renault's withdrawal: 'Lada production in both Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine under Renault majority ownership, employs everyday working people who have been building affordable vehicles exclusively for civilian use continuously since 1969 and I have built a simple enterprise dedicated to selling the great little Niva with its time limited production life to UK enthusiasts.

'As we discontinued new car shipments in February 2022, there are no vehicles left in stock.'

Even imports for personal use have wound down because the situation in both Russia and Ukraine is too politically and physically dangerous for a quick shopping trip.

Despite this, people still buy, sell and drive the Ladas they love.

Ed said: 'It's in many ways been a pleasing constant really, and it's quite nice to see them get a bit of appreciation.'

He added: 'When I go to a strange town, I really notice people turning around the look. It's usually along the lines of, 'It's been so long since I've seen on in general traffic, it's nice to see one scuttling around the place'.'

A three-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the foot with his police officer mother's gun.

The boy opened fire on himself as his mother, a Miami-Dade County Schools cop, was preparing food at their home in Florida, according to the Homestead Police Department.

He was airlifted from the home on Southeast 10th Street in Homestead just before 2pm on Sunday to a hospital in Kendall. The boy was listed in stable condition.

Detectives located a gun on a kitchen counter with a large amount of blood close by, stated an arrest report obtained by NBC6.

The boy's mother, identified as Stephanie Jerez, has been charged with child neglect with great bodily harm.

Her weapon was personally owned and not a firearm she used for work, according to police.

Jerez's lawyer, Robert Buschel, said that her 'son is recovering well'.

'The judicial system and police department will understand that this is a tragedy that does not require additional punishment,' he stated.

On Momday, Miami-Dade County Public Schools said they were 'aware of a non-school related incident' involving an officer over the weekend.

'The officer has been arrested by the Homestead Police Department,' stated the school district. 'The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department has relieved the officer of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.'

Jerez appeared in court on Monday and her bond was set at $5,000. She has been ordered not to buy, use, possess or carry firearms or ammunition unless it is related to work.

The Homestead Police Department stated 'takes cases involving child endangerment very seriously, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and well being of all children'.

In addition, the department urged all gun owners to 'securely store firearms and to educate themselves and their families about gun safety'.

The boy shot himself just weeks after a three-year-old girl fatally shot herself in the eye after getting ahold of her father's unsecured gun in their home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The discovery was truly shocking (Picture: TikTok/@classashley)

A little girl made a horrifying discovery in her bedroom wall which is truly the stuff of nightmares.

Mum Ashley Class had been trying to help her daughter sleep, as the little girl kept complaining of hearing 'monsters' moving around in her walls.

But as the noise persisted, she investigated with a thermal imaging camera which revealed a huge swarm of bees living in her walls.

Swarms of bees spilled out as a hole was cut into the wall, revealing a massive bee colony thought to be made up of about 50,000 of the insects, as well as huge swathes of honeycomb.

Sharing the journey of discovering and removing the bee colony on TikTok, Ashley described the find as 'what nightmares are made of'.

Describing the first day of removal, she said: 'Day 1: Beekeeper removed 20,000 bees and 45kg of honeycomb from the wall.

'He found the queen and is able to safely take the hive to a new home.'

Usually, when a queen is found and taken from a hive, the rest of the bees follow in order to protect her, meaning this is the key part of removing bees from somewhere they don't belong.

Another 20,000 bees were removed from the walls on the second day, and explaining why she and her family didn't notice the bees before, she explained: 'It only takes a couple of bees and a swarm that you might not be able to see to become a colony of 50,000 bees.

'The beekeeper didn't know how many bees were inside the wall when he decided to open it up, even when the thermal imaging showed there was a lot of activity.

'He had greatly underestimated, but it's not his fault as it's not usual that bees bury downwards.

'They had got into a dime sized hole in our chimney, and there's an old clay pipe where it used to heat all the different rooms 100 years ago, and they got into it and buried down next to my daughter's room.'

In total the beekeeper has removed more than 45kg of honeycomb from the walls – and it had to be 'triple bagged' in order to remove it due to the sheer weight of the wax and honey.

But the family's insect woes didn't end there, as they later found a second colony with even more bees hidden inside the walls.

Once all of the bees were removed, Ashley's home was left dripping with honey – a truly bizarre sight.

And to make matters worse, her insurance company said they wouldn't cover the damages.

A murder suspect remains in hospital after a 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed and four others injured in a sword attack in London.

Footage shows the moment before chaos in Hainault, northeast London, when a man went on a sword rampage on a residential road.

A 36-year-old man was tasered and arrested on Tuesday morning and taken to hospital after sustaining injuries when his van crashed into a house.

The suspect remains in hospital and officers have not been able to interview him because of his injuries, the Metropolitan Police said.

Four others, including two police officers, were injured and taken to hospital where they remain.

Two officers suffered wounds that required surgery but are not life-threatening. The injuries of the two people are not thought to be life-threatening.

A 14-year-old boy tragically died from his injuries.

Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell said: 'He was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died a short while after. The child's family are being supported firstly by my local officers and now with some specialist officers.'

The attack is not believed to be targeted or terror-related, the police said.

The Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley spoke to LBC's Nick Ferrari today, saying one of the officers injured in the attack suffered 'really horrifically serious injuries' to her arm.

He said officers arrived at the scene in 12 minutes.

Witnesses have described the terrifying moment they spotted a man armed with a huge sword walking from house to house after crashing his van into a building.

Footage shows police approaching him as he brandishes his weapon.

Mr Bell said the suspect was tasered at the scene and arrested 22 minutes after the first call to the police was made shortly before 7am.

Footage shows how officers shout at the suspect after he was cornered and tasered, saying "don't move, don't f****** move" after he is lying on the ground following three taser discharges.

Manpreet Sing, manager of Redbridge Radio Cars, told Metro.co.uk what he saw outside the taxi firm's office at Hainault Tube station: 'I saw about six or seven people going in and out of Franklyn Gardens and people coming up to the train station saying there was a guy with a machete.'

'It looked like there was one man who had stabbed someone and the other people in the street were bystanders on their way to work who had tried to fight him off.

'A guy walked up the road who had been stabbed in his neck. He was saying "I've been stabbed, I've been stabbed" and walking towards the police.'

He said it looked like 'they tried to intervene but not been able to fight him off' because of the 'size of the weapon.'

He continued: 'When we came out the police cars were there and the guy came running from Franklyn Gardens towards Thurlow Gardens. He tried to get into a house but there was a dog there.

'He tried to get into another house but the police got him under control by tasering him.'

James Fernando, 39, claimed the suspect had asked one of his neighbours to "take the telephone from him to tell whoever was on the phone his location."'

He told PA how the suspect pulled a samurai sword from the back of his trousers.

He said: 'Within two seconds after that she's realised something isn't right, started running and he's pulled a samurai sword from the back of his trouser.

'She's shouted to the other neighbour – a Nigerian boy who was on his way to school.'

The suspect was still 'running around' with a sword in his hand even after the police came, he claimed.

Footage shows a man dressed in a yellow hooded jumper carrying a large knife.

Other footage shows the suspect being chased by police as an officer is heard shouting "lock your doors" as the man entered residential gardens, the news agency reports.

Officers are heard shouting "come here", "come this way" and "drop the sword" at the suspect who climbed on top of an outbuilding and dropped into a garden.

Amir, 36, said the commotion outside his bedroom window woke him up.

He told Metro: 'I saw several police cars going up and down the road, taped off the road and blocked people from going to the station.

'I saw it from my bedroom window, several ambulances and police cars go by every couple of minutes as fast as they could.

'I ended up going out of the building and saw that it was mayhem, really. Police cars everywhere, commuters not knowing what to do, how to get to work, not knowing where this guy had been.'

Another witness said he heard shrieking at about 7am before witnessing a man dressed in yellow climbing over fences.

He told Metro.co.uk: 'I heard shouting, I heard shrieking – I thought "who would be shrieking at this time in the morning?"

'I looked out the back window because the noise was coming from back there, I saw a bloke dressed in yellow jumping over some fences…then he went down an alley like he was going back onto the street again.'

A witness, who asked not to be named, said: 'He disappeared down an alley and then he was out of sight.

'The police went into the alley and there seemed to be some sort of a stand-off there where I heard this huge commotion, then I heard a scream.

'From that commotion, at least one person was knifed – I think it might have been a woman because I heard a woman scream and then some sort of sobbing sounds.

'I then heard a voice say something like "she's been stabbed in the face" or "we need assistance" – you know, calling for medical back-up.'

The Metropolitan Police said yesterday: 'Police and other emergency services are in Hainault, east London, at a serious incident in which a man with a sword has been arrested.

'We were called shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area. There were reports people have been stabbed.

'At this time we understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers.'

Footage seen by PA shows a man in a yellow jumper chasing after an ambulance while holding a sword as a body lies motionless on the ground.

The home security video shows an ambulance parked next to the body lying on the road in Laing Close before the ambulance quickly drives away from the scene and the man runs after it, shouting.

In another video clip, sent by an anonymous resident, a police car arrives before the man verbally confronts the police and shouts "Is there anybody here who believes in God?" while standing next to the motionless body.

A voice is heard shouting "Drop the sword" before a police officer approaches the man and sprays a substance in his direction before he retreats.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said King Charles's 'thoughts and prayers are with all those affected' by the 'horrific' stabbings.

He added: 'In particular, the family of the young victim who has lost his life.'

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on X (formerly Twitter): 'This is a shocking incident. My thoughts are with those affected and their families.

'I'd like to thank the emergency services for their ongoing response, and pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery shown by police on the scene. Such violence has no place on our streets.'

Laboratory mice are deliberately making mistakes during experiments and annoying the scientists watching them.

The humble lab mouse has been used in tests for hundreds of years, but it seems like the small rodents have been carrying out their own experiments, as they do not always perform as expected

Now it seems this isn't just scientific anomaly, but a concerted effort by the mice to mess things up.

Dr Kishore Kuchibhotla, an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University told the Times: 'It can be quite frustrating. You'll be doing an experiment and the [mice] just don't seem to be getting it. You've done everything correctly but they still seem to be making lots of errors.'

The researchers thought the mice were either becoming stressed, or they were deliberately trying to understand their environment and were testing their own knowledge.

Dr Kuchibhotla and his colleague Ziyi Zhu, a graduate neuroscience student, decided to test this theory.

They created an experiment where thirsty mice could hear one of two sounds. When one sound was played, they were supposed to turn a wheel to the left using their front legs, and for the other sound, they had to turn the wheel to the right.

How the task worked (Picture: Kuchibhotla/Zhu/John Hopkins University)

When the mice did this correctly, they were rewarded with a drink of water, and when they spun the wheel the wrong way, they were given nothing at all.

The researchers tracked mouse choice, response speed and accuracy, and noticed that over time the mice got better at the task, but at points, the mice would stop following the rules, and do things like spin the wheel in one direction, no matter what sound they heard.

The researchers then stopped rewarding the mice for their correct answers, and soon the rodents began responding to the sounds more accurately.

The researchers believed the mice knew what they were doing the whole time, and were purposefully giving up the reward to explore their environment by doing experiments of their own.

'Mice are more strategic than some might believe,' said Dr Kuchibhotla, speaking to the Times. 'It may look like the animal is making a ton of errors, but during those errors it's actually getting smarter.'

During the experiments, Dr Kuchibhotla said he became 'a little bit of a mouse psychologist' to interpret their behavior. Like working with a nonverbal infant, he and Mr Zhu had to guess the underlying mental processes from the behaviour alone.

'That's what was really fun in this project, trying to figure out what the mouse is thinking,' he said.

'You have to think about it from the perspective of the animal.'

The findings were published in the journal Current Biology

The key candidates to watch tomorrow (Picture: Getty/Shutterstock)

Candidates from Kent to Cumbria are making their final preparations ahead of polling day tomorrow.

Councils, mayors and police roles across England and Wales will be on the ballot. That includes London, where Sadiq Khan is hoping to become the first mayor to be elected to three terms.

He is up against candidates including Conservative Susan Hall, Zoe Garbett of the Greens and Lib Dem Rob Blackie. So far, they have clashed on issues including crime, housing and the controversial expansion of the city's Ulez – but Mr Khan appears to have a commanding lead going into election day.

Pollsters are predicting a tough night for the Tories across the country, as voters get an early chance to show how they might vote in the general election expected later this year.

But it's also an important opportunity for people to choose who makes the decisions that affect them every day, from bin collection times to fixing potholes in the roads.

Major change to NHS prescriptions from today | X8Y054R | 2024-05-01 11:08:01

The hike from £9.65 to £9.90 per item from today has been described as a 'tax on the working poor' (Picture: PA)

Chemists have warned of a 'dark day' for patients after the cost of an NHS prescription rose to nearly £10.

The hike from £9.65 to £9.90 per item from today has been described as a 'tax on the working poor' by commentators, who warned of a rise in people declining to collect medicines due to the cost.

The 12-month NHS prescription prepayment certificate – which covers all NHS prescriptions for a set price – will increase from £111.60 to £114.50.

Prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) in England said that prescription charges should be scrapped in England.

RPS chairwoman Tase Oputu said: 'This is a dark day for patients who will now have to pay nearly £10 for each item on their prescription.

'Amid the cost-of-living crisis, the rise in prescription charges will hit working people on low incomes the hardest.

'The relentless annual increase in the prescription charge is making medicines unaffordable for many.

'This is totally unacceptable. You can, it seems, put a price on health.

'Every day pharmacists are asked by patients who are unable to afford all the items in their prescription which ones they can 'do without'.

'No-one should face a financial barrier to getting the medicines they need to keep them well.

'Prescription charges should be scrapped in England, as they have been in the rest of the UK.'

Nick Kaye, chairman of the National Pharmacy Association, said: 'To allow the prescription charge to rise to this level is a shameful neglect of working people on low fixed incomes, who are not exempt.

'Many people already choose not to collect some or all their prescription medicines because of cost, with potentially dire health consequences.

'This is a tax on the working poor that deepens the cost-of-living crisis for them.'

Prescriptions are free for certain groups of people (Picture: PA)

Who is exempt from paying for prescriptions in the UK?

Prescriptions are free for certain groups of people including children, over-60s, pregnant women, people who are on certain benefits and people with certain medical conditions.

But the Prescription Charges Coalition, an alliance of more than 50 organisations, has called for an urgent review of the prescription charges exemption list.

The coalition said the exemption list has remained relatively unchanged for the last 50 years and neglects to include many life-altering conditions such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, cystic fibrosis, HIV, and asthma.

It raised concerns that people will be forced to skip their medication because of the spiralling costs.

One patient with Parkinson's disease said her financial situation was 'dire' as a result of living with the condition.

Wendy Tombs, from Shropshire, said: 'The prescription price rise is just another nail in the coffin for people living with Parkinson's.

'The way prices keep going up, I don't know how much longer I can last.'

The 59-year-old has received a grant from charity Parkinson's UK to cover the cost of her prescription prepayment certificate.

Laura Cockram, head of campaigns at Parkinson's UK and chairwoman of the coalition, said: 'The NHS prescription charge price increase has struck fear into people living with long-term health conditions, such as Parkinson's.

'People are already struggling financially due to the cost-of-living crisis, and increasing the cost of prescriptions will result in more people missing, reducing, or delaying taking their medication, meaning their condition will deteriorate.

'There is limited financial support that charities can offer to offset Government shortcomings.

'That's why we're calling on the UK Government to freeze the charge in 2025 and commit to urgently reviewing the prescription charge exemption list.'

A Department for Health and Social Care spokesperson said: 'Almost nine in 10 prescription items are available for free on the NHS in England and children, and those aged 60 and over, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions like cancer, epilepsy and diabetes remain exempt.

'This wide range of support, as well as the NHS Low Income scheme, ensures that everyone who needs a prescription can afford it.

'Where charges are in place, it is important prices are regularly updated to ensure the NHS maintains a sustainable business model and can continue to deliver excellent patient care.'

Eerie pictures have emerged of a huge failed housing scheme left to rot.

The Mehra Mer project, located 31 miles outside Iran's capital city of Tehran, had high hopes of becoming a ready-made community equipped with public transport, hospitals, and schools.

But nowadays the project looks like it would fit in as the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-esque film.

Incredible aerial pictures show around 100 tower blocks which appear to have sprung out of nowhere from the surrounding desert, with barely any surrounding infrastructure and half-built roads that lead nowhere.

They're part of a wider development of homes on the outskirts of Tehran called Pardis, meaning 'paradise' – but this name might be overselling things somewhat.

Built between 2001 and 2011, it was hoped the project would help Iran to tackle its population crisis by creating affordable homes for lower-income workers.

Piles of construction materials have been left behind (Picture: HOSSEIN BERIS/Middle East Images/AFP via Getty Images)

It was hoped the development would become a 'Paradise City' – but some of the first flats to be occupied turned out to have faulty sewage systems and heating, inadequate water access, and only intermittent electricity.

The progress of desolation was sped up by the 2017 earthquake which damaged or destroyed a number of buildings, leaving even more empty.

Soaring inflation rates amid Iran's struggling economy were the final nail in the coffin for the project, as the cost of the apartments became unattainable for lower wage workers – the exact people who were supposed to benefit from the scheme.

The ecological conditions also hampered the project's construction, and in the end developers scrapped the scheme mid-construction.

There are mountains of building materials, including thousands of plastic buckets and piles of cables and wiring, dumped in the desert.

While some of the blocks were completed, others are towers of exposed concrete with no doors or windows in some cases.

But despite how it looks, Mehra Mer isn't completely abandoned.

The most recent census in 2016 recorded a population of just over 73,000 people, The Sun reports, but it's thought most residents spend the majority of their time in Tehran for work, only returning to sleep.

There isn't any public transport linking Mehra Mer to Tehran either – and the commute can take hours each way, making the satellite cities an even less appealing prospect for wannabe homeowners.

It's not long until the May Day bank holiday, traditionally the start of summer in the UK.

But is it actually going to be summery, or a washout?

With a few days still to go, models have been somewhat contradictory on exactly how the weather will look, but so far the indications aren't great.

At least some parts of the country can expect a rainy weekend, despite some warmer days this week.

The Met Office forecast for Friday to Sunday predicts weather will 'remain changeable with further spells of rain or showers, particularly in the south. In any drier and brighter interludes it will feel warm away from the east coast.'

There will be an 'uncertain period through the bank holiday weekend with the most likely result a warm but cloudy day Sunday with a few light showers, then increasingly cloudy with rain spreading from the west, though weakening as it does so'.

How the Met Office predicted Sunday afternoon could look (Picture: Met Office)

'Into the new week all areas are likely to see a mixture of showery periods or spells of rain.'

At the moment, there is still some uncertainty about how the weather will pan out.

The gloomier latest forecasts come days after senior meteorologist at the Met Office Amy Bokota said: 'Temperatures have been below average for the last couple of weeks, so certainly by the time we get to Wednesday, and probably into next weekend, temperatures will be warmer.

'It might not be the sort of glorious sort of heatwave that we're hoping for … but there probably will be some more pleasant and warmer weather for some people as we head towards the end of the week.'

So it's possible people might get some use out of their barbecues and garden furniture… but more likely they'll need an umbrella.

Tornadoes wrecked deadly havoc on numerous US states over the weekend and the worst may be yet to come, as twister season continues for another few months.

Powerful storms brought tornadoes to Nebraska and Iowa on Friday and Saturday, and twisters tore down towns in Oklahoma on Sunday.

A tornado is a 'narrow, violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground' that 'forms a condensation funnel made up of water droplets, dust and debris', according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL).

The US is hit by about 1,200 tornadoes annually and first began keeping a record of them in 1950.

Tornadoes struck Nebraska over the weekend (Pictures: Reuters/AP)

This year from April 26 to 28, at least 72 twisters hit the US from Nebraska to Texas.

On Friday, a tornado destroyed homes in Omaha and left 10,000 Nebraskans without power. One of the hardest hit places was Elkorn in the western area of the city, where hundreds of residences were ripped apart. Resident Kim Woods said 'the whole neighborhood just to the north of us is pretty flattened'.

Twisters descended on Oklahoma on Saturday into Sunday and killed at least four people including a child. Among the communities that were struck were Holdenville, Marietta and Sulpher, which seemed to be battered by several tornadoes overnight.

How are tornadoes categorized?

Tornadoes are categorized by strength based on the damage they inflict, which in turn helps determine their wind speed. The National Weather Service implemented the Enhanced Fujita Scale in 2007 to rate them.

Tornado damage in Sulphur, Oklahoma, on Sunday (Picture: USA Today Network)

The EF-Scale classifies tornadoes into three broad categories based on wind speeds and damage inflicted. EF0 and EF1 are 'weak' with wind speeds of 65mph to 110mph. EF2 and EF3 are 'strong' with winds speeds of 111mph to 165mph. EF4 and EF5 are 'violent' with wind speeds of 166mph to 200mph.

Where in the US is there tornado risk?

A map of tornado probabilities created by the NSSL based on data from a 30-year period of severe weather reports from 1982 to 2011 shows eight gradients of tornado risk, from dark to light.

The darkest shade of brown, representing the highest risk, is in the center of Oklahoma. A medium shade of brown for the second highest risk surrounds the dark brown and covers much of Oklahoma as well as a section of northern Texas and a sliver of Kansas.

A map of tornado probabilities based on tracking from 1982 to 2011 (Picture: NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory)

A dark red representing the third highest risk touches parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and the northwestern tip of Louisiana.

The heat map spans out to other parts of the Southwest, Mideast, with lower risk extending to the Southeast and Northeast. The West is largely untouched.

What is Tornado Alley?

'Tornado Alley' is a 'nickname invented by the media to refer to a broad area of relatively high tornado occurrence in the central United States', according to the NSSL.

Such maps may differ because twister occurrence can be measured in different ways, including all tornadoes, only violent ones, by counties, and within certain time frames.

A tornado risk index map by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Picture: Federal Emergency Management Agency)

According to the NSSL, the term tornado alley can also be misleading.

'The US tornado threat shifts from the Southeast in the cooler months of the year, toward the southern and central Plains in May and June, and the northern Plains and Midwest during early summer,' stated the agency.

'Tornadoes can occur and have been reported in all fifty states!'

When is tornado season?

The peak tornado season in the southern Plains, which include Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, runs from May into early June.

A severe tornado striking Lancaster, Nebraska (Picture: AP)

In the northern Plains and upper Midwest including North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, the season is in June and July.

Meanwhile on the Gulf Coast, tornadoes occur earlier in the spring.

The NSSL cautioned that tornadoes can happen any time of the year and in the day or night, but most commonly from 4pm to 9pm.

A scandal has deepened over a prominent pro-Putin Russian politician, 71, who 'kidnapped' two children from occupied Ukraine.

Sergey Mironov, leader of the Fair Russia party, is accused of a war crime after he and his fifth wife removed a ten-month-old girl and a two-year-old boy.

The politician 'adopted' and renamed the girl Marina Mrionova from an orphanage with his wife Irina Varlamova, 56, before changing her birth certificate to make it seem as though she was born near Moscow.

An investigation has now revealed the girl, whose real name is Margarita, has a legal Ukrainian guardian who is now living in exile from the war in Greece with the child's full sibling, an elder sister named Anna.

Ukrainian officials are demanding that the politician and his wife return the girl so she can be reunited with her blood sister.

The boy taken by the politician's wife was brought to Russia but after less than a week was rejected by Mironov and his spouse.

The boy, then two and now four, was thrown out like an 'unwanted kitten', according to Ukrainian TSN TV channel.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament's human rights ombudsman, said: 'Varlamova got rid of the boy when it became known that Ilya Vashchenko was diagnosed with a disease.'

Leaked Varlamova emails reveal she complained she was given a 'low quality child'.

The boy's fate is not known, but a new birth certificate was issued for him in Moscow region.

The head of the Child Protection Department of the Office of the Prosecutor General in Ukraine said: 'Specifically about Ilya, we have no information about where the boy is now.

'A fake birth certificate is the first thing they issue in Russia to make it impossible to find abducted children. The girl that Mironov and Varlamova stole received a new ID. Now, as written in the new certificate, she is not Ukrainian Margarita Prokopenko, but Marina Mironova, born in the Moscow region….

Pro-war Russian politician Sergey Mironov has been accused of the crime (Picture: East2West News)

'It seems that the kidnapper hopes that Margarita will eventually get used to both the new family and the new name, as if it's better than being a lonely orphan in an orphanage.

'But the fact is that Margarita has relatives – both a sister and a legal guardian. Nobody asked their permission when Margarita was taken out of Kherson. They are looking for the stolen girl and are ready to give her a real family.'

Lubinets said: 'We already have a family that is ready to become a new family for Margarita. Moreover, this family is raising Margarita's own sister.

'Therefore, we have all the obligations from the state to turn to mediators, as well as to the international community, so that they demand from the Russian federation the urgent return of Margarita to her sister so that the reunification of the Ukrainian family takes place.'

Anna – believed to be 11 – is being raised by her godmother Daria Repina, who is legal guardian to both girls.

Daria said: 'When I was told that the child was alive, that she had been adopted, it was a great happiness for us.

'It means we have a chance to take her back, that she will be with us. That the children will be reunited. Because children should grow in a family, in their own family. The two of them.'

Mironov's loyalty and obedience to Putin has been known since he stood against the dictator in a presidential election in 2004.

He said at the time, indicating he was a sham candidate: 'We all want Vladimir Putin to be the next president.'

In Soviet times, he served in the USSR's airborne troops and later worked as a geophysicist, before entering politics.

Lawyer Maria Chashchilova said Mironov's act of 'adoption' 'is considered genocide' due to the 'forcible transfer of children from one human group to another'.

She said: 'These children often have relatives or guardians in Ukraine who have lost contact with them, and in the case of children from orphanages, the guardians are officials of these institutions.

'According to international law, the parties to the conflict must provide relatives and guardians with information about the missing and facilitate their search.'

Putin and his children's ombudswoman Maria Lvova-Belova have been indicted by the International Criminal Court as war criminals over the illegal human trafficking of young people from Ukraine to Russia.

Mironov hit out at 'fake hysteria unleashed by the Ukrainian special services and their Western curators' over the adoption story – but leaked documents and emails show the Ukrainian child is now 'legally' adopted by him and his wife.

Fireworks, police batons and arrests have been spreading across the states (Pictures: AP)

Following the arrest of dozens of protestors at Columbia University in New York, a similar demonstration at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) has spiraled into chaos.

Video of pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protestors throwing pallets and hitting each other, leaving many bloodied, have begun to circulate as reporters on the ground have reported no police presence – with one witness saying 'security ran away'.

Police are now slowly moving into the scene to help corral people into a certain direction and break up the skirmishes, and some officers have been seen putting on gas masks.

Other California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles Police Department officers have been spotted lining up outside of the encampment, which has a large homemade barricade made with metal barriers and plywood to keep the two sides apart.

A corridor has been created on a walkway to allow protestors to leave the area peacefully without being arrested as police continue to move in.

Earlier, video showed batons being used as the demonstration unraveled into chaos, with a news anchor commenting: 'Where are the police? Where is security? Where is the authority? It's something I've never covered…'

In one clip, a protestor appeared to be hit by a wooden pallet someone threw at him – to which the news anchor watching gasped at. The scenes began unfolding around 11pm California time.

Journalist Jack Ross has reported that pro-Palestinian protestors have been taking their own to hospitals because 'UCLA PD won't let EMS' in. Earlier, it was reported that a female Jewish student had been 'knocked unconscious'. Both of these reports are unconfirmed.

He quoted a source saying: 'Which means our camp has treated 100+ people so far for medical injuries including tear gas pepper spray head injuries from projectiles fireworks burns shock. Not a single EMS from outside our camp or network has been able to respond, actively being blocked.'

One video showed a firework being thrown towards the pro-Palestine encampment, with protestors screaming and ducking behind umbrellas before it exploded.

Riot police have been seen on the ground, and were greeted by pro-Israel demonstrators, some draped in the Israeli flag, with chants of 'USA! USA!'

LA councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky said in a statement: 'Everyone has a right to free speech and protest, but the situation on UCLA's campus is out of control and is no longer safe.

'I'm grateful to LAPD and Mayor Bass for stepping in to ensure the safety of everyone on campus.'

More than 1,000 protesters have been arrested over the last two weeks on university campuses in Texas, Utah, Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico, Connecticut, Louisiana, California and New Jersey.

At Columbia University, Hamilton Hall – which protestors renamed 'Hind Hall' in honour of a killed Palestinian girl – was cleared of protesters who took over building on Tuesday.

The scene unfolded shortly after 9pm yesterday evening as police, wearing helmets and carrying zip ties and riot shields, gathered at the Ivy League university's entrance.

A statement released by a Columbia spokesperson late on Tuesday said officers arrived on campus after the university requested help – hours after the NYPD said officers would not enter the university campus without university request or an imminent emergency.

The White House condemned the standoffs at Columbia on Tuesday and California State Polytechnic University Humboldt earlier in the week.

Other universities have sought to negotiate agreements with the demonstrators in the hopes of having peaceful commencement ceremonies.

The nationwide campus protests began at Columbia in response to Israel's offensive in Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7.

Militants killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took roughly 250 hostages.

In return, Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the local health ministry.

The reasons behind the protest vary slightly, but overall agree that the US should end military support to Israel.

Some university students, such as those at Columbia, are demanding their schools sever any financial ties to Israel and other companies involved directly in the conflict.

Mass arrests have led to calls for amnesty of students and faculty who are disciplined for their involvement in the protests.
